My husband, James, and I met in college in Florida over eleven years ago, and little to say we were completely uneducated on the importance of sun protection. I wish I knew then, in my 20s, what I know now. Now that I’m struggling with hyperpigmentation and using all the serums/creams in the book I wish I could tell my 20-something self to step away from the sun.
As James and I start to look down the long tunnel of our 30s we have both been making changes in our health routines, including skin protection. I tan very easily and sun has always been my friend. James is on the paler side and burns easily. So easy to say buying affordable sun protection for our drastically different needs has been not too easy for us.
After some research and a visit to my local BJ’s Wholesale Club, we have found our go-tos.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen Broad-Spectrum SPF 100+ – I didn’t even know SPF 100+ was a thing, but as soon as I found this in a two-pack in BJ’s health and beauty section I knew I had to grab it for James. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen Spray with Broad-Spectrum SPF 100+ provides powerful sun protection that is not greasy with a sheer, ultralight finish. Plus, the “Full Reach design” of the bottle makes it so much easier to get those hard to reach places because if he misses one place I’m talking beat red, horribly painful sunburn.
Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Soothe Lotion – Speaking of those painful sunburns we have both fallen in love with the Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Soothe Lotion. It feels so good after a day in the sun and I got a 2-pack of 20 oz bottles at BJ’s for a crazy good price.
Sun Protection for Her
Alba Botanica Hawaiian Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen – For me, the sunscreen I reach for has changed. I used to look for the lowest SPF hoping for a golden tan. With age, now I have learned my lesson of baking in the sun and reach for a SPF that is not as strong and James’ but still will do the job for my tan skin. Alba Botanica Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 Hawaiian Sunscreen does not contain oxybenzone, octinoxate, PABA and nano-sunscreens. Formulas are reef-safe, biodegradable, gluten-free and recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. So it’s safe to say this sunscreen is safe.
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle SPF15 Moisturizer – This year has been my year of upping my skin care routine and adding SPF is a must. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer with a SPF15 features anti-oxidant vitamins C and E help fight environmental damage while pro-vitamin B5 moisturizes soften and smooths the skin. This sunscreen helps you have the sun protection you need to prevent premature signs of aging. I’m working on getting James to add this to his daily routine too. At BJ’s, it comes in a two-pack at an incredible value, so there’s no excuse not to use it daily!
Burt’s Bees Lip Balm Variety Pack – One small thing you cannot forget about it your lips. After a long day in the sun my lips are dying for moisture. I’m partial to Burt’s Bees and the 8-pack I got at BJ’s will last us all summer and beyond.
