This weather here in DC has had me reaching for other things to lift my spirit other then my morning Starbucks. These past couple mornings I have found myself looking for colors to add to my outfit that are bit brighter, to liven up my spirits. There are three color trends I am noticing that aren’t your typical, boring winter grey and black. I am seeing; mustard yellow, tomato red and plum/deep purples.

Every single one of these colors can be added to neutrals (creams, tans, etc) and basics (black, white and grey) without being too bright for winter. Also, try to mix and match the three colors together (not all at once) for an extra boost. Studies do show that wearing certain colors can help improve your mood, and with this winter dragging on into the dark and cold, these colors might be a good additional pick-me-up. From a little bit of digging around the web I found out how these three colors will alter your mood:

Red will give you a boost of energy whilst stimulating your immune system. Red can activate your appetite – beware. It evokes action and passion and a perfect color if you tend to be a procrastinator.

Yellow lifts your spirits and offers you a positive feeling. It evokes confidence and joy. It is connected to your mental thinking and improves attention to detail and academic achievement. It improves concentration and clarity of thought.

Purple is known to heighten your intuition. It is similar to blue in that it offers comfort.

No matter what of these three colors you add to your winter wardrobe, I am sure you are already seeing sites start to show you their Spring Collections and you are thinking, ‘Ahhhh! Already?! I can’t wear this itsy-bitsy floral dress in this 20 degree weather!’ No need to panic, this is actually a good thing because now the winter-wear is going on sale. Yay! Some great winter sales I am seeing are at Gap, Banana Republic, and Ann Taylor Loft. I am starting to notice that the sales on the sites are actually not as good as in the stores, so to avoid the snow, pop into the store and take your time digging for a bit of color to add to your winter.

The yellow is spectacular with the boots, a trendy treat in deed!

I know! That is personally my favorite color of the three. Avoid chocolate browns (the color shown in the pic is fine) with it, or you look like a walking banana. I like creams and pale pink with it. :)

I don’t think I could pull off red skinny pants….that would be a bad look for me.
